Detail from the Old Map of Suffolk Suffolk was a prosperous county: as John Speede noted "most plenteous and pleasant for habitation - the extent of the counties commerce can be seen in the size and number of its ports, the greatest of which is Ipswich." Despite its richness Suffolk did not have a ready supply of good building stone and relied on timber framed and plastered houses, finished (as today) with colour washes and thatched roofs.
