The Isle of Wight was a key part of the national defence of the south of England. Henry V111 developed a series of small artillery forts and blockhouses along the north shore of the island that consisted of sand banks, rocks and mudflats. Much of the islands southern coastline was made up of sheer chalky cliffs. Despite its fortifications and imposing coastline the Isle of Wight was thought to be a pleasant place to live.
