The antique map of Cambridgeshire is one of the most elaborate John Speed maps, with
a ground plan of Cambridge, royal arms and four academic figures. Cambridgeshire fell into two main areas, the Isle of Ely and the rest |
of the county. The Isle was so-called because of the surrounding marshlands or fens.
This resulted in the Isle of Ely being administered separately by the Bishop
of Ely. |
